Piazzo
Piazzo: a town in Turin
Hi everyone! Today I will talk to you about Piazzo, a small town located in the metropolitan city of Turin, 356 meters above sea level. Before being aggregated to Lauriano, Piazzo was the capital of an autonomous municipality that also included the geographical fractions of Bartina, Berna, Civignola, San Pietro and Torrione.
Origin of the name
The name Piazzo comes from the Latin term "Placium", which appears in a document from 1024.
Physical geography
Piazzo is located on the right bank of the Po River, in the hilly area on the border between Asti and the Po Hills. The town occupies a relief on the highest point of which the former parish church stands.
History
The territory of Piazzo was a fiefdom of the counts of Cocconato and suffered looting and devastation during the siege of the Verrua Savoia fortress in 1625, so much so that the town remained almost uninhabited for several years. In 1846, the municipality had 887 inhabitants and the main activities were lime quarries and agriculture. In 1928, Piazzo was aggregated to Lauriano and its ISTAT code was 001848, while for the land registry the code was G584 until 1983.
