Borgo Santa Maria

Welcome to Borgo Santa Maria!

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Borgo Santa Maria, a hamlet of the city of Latina, located in the heart of the Agro Pontino, in Lazio. This beautiful town is crossed by the Moscarello Stream, also known as "Mussolini's Canal", which flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea near the coastal area of Foce Verde, at Lido di Latina. So, if you are looking for a peaceful place immersed in nature, this is the right place for you!

Physical Geography

As I just mentioned, Borgo Santa Maria is located about 10 km west of the provincial capital, and is surrounded by the greenery of the Pontine plain. In 1937, the famous paleontologist Alberto Carlo Blanc discovered signs of life from elephants, lions, oxen, horses and panthers, during the excavation of the Moscarello Stream. This allowed for the documentation of the climate and habitat of different geological periods, adding further charm to this area.

History

The territory of Borgo Santa Maria has a very interesting history. In the 1930s, over 30,000 hectares of land were reclaimed in the Agro Pontino, with the creation of new canals and the construction of farmhouses. Many families from Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Friuli moved to this area to work the land and build a new life. Until the 1950s, there were only swamps here, whose malaria was a real problem for the local population. However, thanks to the construction of the church of Santa Maria and the elementary school, the village began to prosper, and the inhabitants asked the municipality to change its name. The city council decided to name it "Borgo Santa Maria", creating a direct connection with the new church.

Monuments and places of interest

Despite being a very small hamlet, Borgo Santa Maria has one main attraction: the Church of Santa Maria, then Santa Maria della Letizia. This religious building was built during the 1950s, and represents a very important place for the local community. Here you can admire the frescoes of the priest Nicola Guerra, an artist who spent many years in Latina. In addition, the church is surrounded by a beautiful garden, which offers further relaxation area for visitors.

Conclusions

In summary, Borgo Santa Maria is a peaceful and pleasant place, surrounded by the greenery of the Pontine plain. This hamlet, which was once just swamps, has been reclaimed and transformed into an oasis of peace for the families who live there. The Church of Santa Maria represents the hub of the local community, and its beauty attracts many visitors each year. I highly recommend taking a walk in this beautiful hamlet, and letting the tranquility of nature conquer you!
