Borgo Montello

Borgo Montello: a village with history and tradition

Borgo Montello, formerly known as Conca (Latina), is a village in the municipality of Latina founded in the 1930s during the reclamation and colonization of the Agro Pontino. Despite the fame given by the Borgo Montello landfill, located on the border with Borgo Bainsizza, the village has a long history and rich culture, dating back to the fascist period in Italy.

Toponymy: names that recall antiquity

The names of the ancient cities of Lazio have inspired the toponymy of Borgo Montello. Anzio, Suessa Pometia, and Vescia are just some of the toponyms that recall the antiquity of the region. The village also has a garden square named after the parish priest Don Cesare Boschin, a figure much loved by the local community.

Borgo Montello: History, Traditions and Cultural Heritage

History: a historic center dating back to the year 1000

Borgo Montello is located north of Latina and is known for its characteristic historic center dating back to the year 1000. The historic center includes the Castle, which was once the residence of the noble Corsini counts and then of the Mazzoleni counts. Today the castle is a private residence, but you can still admire the characteristic ancient Granary and the ancient stables, now transformed into private homes.

The ancient walls of the historic center enclose the Church of the Holy Annunciation, dating back to the seventeenth century, where Santa Maria Goretti received her First Communion.

The population of Borgo Montello is mostly descended from the reclamation pioneers from Friuli, Veneto, and Emilia. The local community still maintains the traditions and typical customs of the Venetopontine communities.

Conclusion: Borgo Montello, a place to discover

The historic center with the Castle, the ancient Granary, and the Church of the Holy Annunciation are just some examples of the village's richness. Borgo Montello deserves to be known and appreciated for its history and cultural heritage.
