Exploring Laterina, a small town in Tuscany

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Laterina, a small town in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany. Laterina is a municipality of the city of Laterina Pergine Valdarno, which also includes the hamlets of Casanuova, Ponticino and Vitareta, with a total population of 3486 inhabitants.

Physical Geography

Laterina is located in seismic classification zone 3, which means its seismicity is low. The city is in climatic zone D with high atmospheric diffusivity, as detected by an Ibimet CNR research in 2002.

History

In 1860, a plebiscite was held for the annexation of Tuscany to the Kingdom of Sardinia, and the "yes" vote narrowly lost, with 326 votes against 669 total. During World War II, Laterina was home to a military prison camp which later became a refugee camp for Istrian exiles.

On January 1, 2018, the municipality of Laterina merged with the adjacent municipality of Pergine Valdarno, forming the new entity of Laterina Pergine Valdarno.

Monuments and Places of Interest

There is a lot to see in Laterina! The Pieve dei Santi Ippolito and Cassiano, whose bell tower can be seen from kilometers away, is certainly one of the city's highlights. The Church of Santa Maria della Neve is also an important site, as well as the Oratorio of San Biagio and the Pieve dei Santi Ippolito and Cassiano in Le Pievi. The Romanesque bridge and Montozzi Castle are other monuments worth visiting.

Society

The foreign population residing in Laterina, as of December 31, 2009, was 301 people, with Albanians, Romanians and North Macedonians as the top three nationalities.

Every year, the city hosts the "Medieval Festival", a three-day medieval-themed event at the end of July. On August 5th, the Madonna della Neve alla Maestà is celebrated, while on the third Sunday of September, Monday and Tuesday, the festival of the Most Holy Crucifix is held in Propositura.

Culture

The 1996 film "Cyclone" was shot in Stia, Laterina, and Poppi.

Infrastructure and Transport

There is a train station in Laterina in the nearby hamlet of Montalto on the Florence-Rome railway.
