Welcome to the Province of Campobasso!
Hello everyone! Today I will talk about the Province of Campobasso, a beautiful area in Molise that covers an area of 2909 square kilometers and has around 210,000 inhabitants. The province comprises 84 municipalities, including the capital Campobasso, where the institutional headquarters are located at the Palazzo Magno.
Let's discover the physical geography
The territory of the Province of Campobasso is very varied and diverse, starting from the mountains of the Sannita Apennines, passing through the hills, lakes and rivers of the hinterland, to finally reach the coastal strip of the Adriatic. Here you can find villages, towns, and cities, where nature and architecture blend perfectly.
The rivers
Speaking of hydrography, the province is crossed by the valleys of Trigno, Biferno, and Fortore, which generally have a straight course, surrounded by the slopes of hills and mountains. The Biferno River, 84 kilometers long, crosses the Lake of Guardialfiera, which is blocked by a dam for the production of electricity. The Fortore River, on the other hand, marks the border between Molise and Puglia, crossing the Lake of Occhito. The Trigno River marks the border between Molise and Abruzzo.
The lakes
The Province of Campobasso also has two artificial lakes: the Lake of Guardialfiera, also known as "del Liscione", and the Lake of Occhito. The first was created thanks to the dam of the same name, and can be traversed by two spectacular viaducts, called "Molise I" and "Molise II", which cross the lake for 8.5 kilometers.
A curiosity about the emblem
The Province of Campobasso is a bit atypical compared to other Italian provinces regarding the emblem: without a crown, not framed inside a shield or other geometric shape, and reproduced on a red banner. The elements of this emblem, wheat ears and an 8-pointed star, are derived from the ancient Province of Contado di Molise.
Conclusion
Here is a brief summary of all there is to know about the Province of Campobasso. From views of the Adriatic Sea to the mountains and valleys that cross the territory, there are many things to see and do for nature and culture enthusiasts. So, if you're planning a trip to Italy, don't forget to visit this wonderful province in Molise!
