Lardirago

Lardirago: a village on the Olona river

Hi everyone! Today I would like to talk to you about Lardirago, a charming village located in Lombardy, in the province of Pavia. The village has 1137 inhabitants and is located in the central-eastern territory of Pavese, on the left bank of the southern Olona river. The name Lardirago comes from ''Lardirà'' in the Pavia dialect and it is believed that the village already existed in the 12th century, under the name of Lardiragum.

History

Lardirago was part of the Lower Pavia countryside and was under the lordship of the Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in Pavia, who also owned the Castle of Lardirago. In the 16th century, the village was assigned to the Ghislieri College, of which it was a fiefdom until the 18th century. Over the years, Lardirago has undergone several municipal aggregations: between 1929 and 1947, the municipalities of Ceranova and Sant'Alessio with Vialone were merged, while in 1963 the hamlet of Gioiello was separated from Lardirago and joined Ceranova.

Symbols

The municipal coat of arms of Lardirago depicts the Castle of Lardirago with crossed swords, referring to the battles that took place in 1154, near the village, between the Milanese and the Pavesi on the eve of the diet of Roncaglia convened by Frederick Barbarossa. The banner is a white drape.

Society

Lardirago has seen a constant demographic evolution over the years, going from just over 1000 inhabitants in the 1970s to the current 1137. The village is characterized by a united and welcoming community.

Administration

The municipality of Lardirago is twinned with the city of Ribeira Grande in the Azores, Portugal.
