Altavilla: history and nature in the Sila region of Calabria

History

Origins

According to Calabrian erudite tradition, Altavilla dates back to the decades around the year 1000, when the inhabitants of Cosenza took refuge on the nearby hills to escape Saracen raids. However, recent historiographic criticism suggests that the Cosenza hamlets have much older roots, probably dating back to the Roman era.

The discovery of epigraphic fragments and an inscription on a tuff slab, near the church of the Madonna dell'Assunta, confirm that Altavilla was already inhabited in Roman times.

The High Middle Ages

Unfortunately, written documentation and other historical sources on the settlement of Altavilla in the High Middle Ages are nonexistent or very scarce. However, thanks to documents related to the Angevine taxation of 1275, we know that Lappano, of which Altavilla is part, had a population of 265 households, or about 1326 people.
