Lanzo d'Intelvi
Lanzo d'Intelvi: a precious location for centuries
If you are looking for a place surrounded by nature and rich in history, Lanzo d'Intelvi could be the right place for you. This beautiful Italian hamlet, located in the province of Como, has been incorporated into the municipality of Alta Valle Intelvi since 2017, but until December 31, 2016, it was an autonomous municipality.
Lanzo d'Intelvi has been considered a precious location since the beginning of the 20th century thanks to its ties with Milanese and Jewish aristocratic families. In the past, it was possible to reach the city of Lugano by means of a now-disused funicular, but that is about to be reactivated. This means of transport allowed to reach the shores of Lake Lugano and to walk the lakefront all the way to the city of Lugano.
However, the history of this place is much older. In the territory of Lanzo d'Intelvi, remains of constructions and boulders with cup marks were found, evidence of human presence since prehistoric times. During the Middle Ages, Lanzo d'Intelvi and the fraction of Scaria were part of the feud of Campione d'Italia, ruled by the abbots of the Milanese monastery of Sant'Ambrogio. In 1500, Pope Paul II promoted the construction of the sanctuary of Madonna di Loreto, which became a very important place of devotion for the local community.
The symbols of Lanzo d'Intelvi
The coat of arms of the municipality of Lanzo d'Intelvi was granted by royal decree of August 24, 1928, and represents a halberd, which refers to the name of the municipality.
