Torrechiara: discovery of a medieval gem.

Origin of the Name

But why the name Torrechiara? The location was known in medieval times as "Torcularia" and "Torclaria," and its name derives from the presence of numerous olive presses used for pressing olives, which were cultivated on the olive groves that extended nearby.

History

Torrechiara has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the discovery of human settlements. Even the Roman age has left its mark in the area, with the trace of the last southern extensions of the centuriation.

But it is with the village of "Torcularia" that the history of Torrechiara comes to life: its foundation dates back to 1028. The castle, on the other hand, was first mentioned in 1259 when the podestà of Parma decided to demolish it. Later, a fortified house was built on its ruins by the Scorza family, but it was destroyed in 1293 on the order of the podestà Marco Giustiniani.

In 1308 the Meli Lupi and the Rossi of Parma were expelled from the city and found refuge in Torrechiara, where they rebuilt the fortification. However, the podestà resumed the siege against the fortress, which fell in 1313.

But the history of Torrechiara is mainly linked to the Rossi family. In 1448, Pier Maria II de 'Rossi had the castle rebuilt on the ruins of the ancient settlement, giving life to the majestic manor that we still admire today. Guido de 'Rossi, his main heir, took possession of it at the count's death.

During the war of the Rossis, the manor was besieged and fell into the hands of Milanese troops. The feuds of Felino, Torrechiara, and San Secondo Parmense then passed to the Sforza family, administrators of the Rossian properties.

The Castle of Torrechiara

The castle of Torrechiara is certainly the pearl of the locality. The majestic manor of pink color, surrounded by the wonderful Emilian countryside, enchants visitors from the first glance.

Its structure consists of four circular towers that rise towards the sky, connected to each other by a system of arches and walls. Even the interiors of the castle leave you breathless, with its frescoes, decorated rooms, and Gothic or Renaissance-style columns and doors.
