The history of Pairana
As we mentioned before, the historical origin of Pairana dates back to Roman times. In fact, some ancient Roman bricks were found in the area during the destruction of the castle in 1994. The name of the town derives from the ancient owner's Latin personal name, to whom the name "Vico Pariano" is attributed in a high medieval document from 856.
In the ninth century, Pairana was part of the Bascapè fiefdom, belonging to the homonymous family, and then passed, in the fourteenth century, to the Marquises Brivio. In 1751, Pairana had 471 inhabitants, all dedicated to agricultural activities. However, the population then decreased, reaching 399 individuals in 1805.
Pairana has always been closely linked to Milan and, by order of the Austrian government, passed to the jurisdiction of Pavia first provisionally in 1786, and then definitively in 1815. In 1859, the locality had 489 inhabitants, then decreasing to 425 in 1871. In 1872, Pairana was merged with the municipality of Landriano.
The parishes of Pairana
The parish church of Pairana is dedicated to the Purification of the Virgin Mary and was built in the fifteenth century on an existing building. It is an attraction for visitors, with its ancient architecture and frescoes.
