Landriano

Presentation of Landriano

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Landriano, an Italian municipality located in the province of Pavia in Lombardy. The city, called "Landriàn" in Pavese dialect, has a population of about 6,500 inhabitants and is located in northeastern Pavia, bordering the metropolitan city of Milan. It extends along the left bank of the southern Lambro and the islet which hosts the ancient Castle of Landriano.

History

Landriano is a city with a long history dating back to the 11th century. Belonging to the Milanese territory under the control of the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, it had its local lords, who took the name of Captains of Landriano or Landriani. In 1396, Gian Galeazzo Visconti donated many agricultural lands to the Certosa di Pavia. In 1522, the Taverna di Milano, Counts of Landriano, took over as feudatories, until the abolition of feudalism.

The history of Landriano: from its foundation to the battle of 1529.

The battle of Landriano

On June 21, 1529, during the War of the League of Cognac, the city of Landriano was the stage of an important battle between the French army of Francis I and the Spanish army of Charles V. The battle marked the end of Francis I's ambitions towards Milan and allowed Charles V to obtain his consecration in Bologna. The defeat of the French was caused by the defection of the Genoese captain Andrea Doria and the failure of the siege of Naples. During the battle, the lanzichenecchi did not fight alongside the French and refused to take part in the battle because they were not paid. This victory led to the signing of the Treaty of Cambrai.

Modern age

Landriano belonged to the province of the Duchy of Milan until 1786, when it was assigned to the province of Pavia as part of the luminist reforms of Emperor Joseph II. In 1872, the municipality of Landriano merged with Pairana.

In conclusion, Landriano is a city that boasts a long history and has witnessed important events during the War of the League of Cognac. If you visit the city, I suggest taking a guided tour of the Castle of Landriano to discover its unique history.
