Welcome to the Province of Chieti!
Hello everyone! Today I'm going to talk to you about the stunning province of Chieti, located in the beautiful Abruzzo region. With its 104 municipalities and an area of about 2,600 km², it is the most populous province in the region and the second largest after that of L'Aquila.
The Physical Geography of the Province of Chieti
The province of Chieti has a predominantly hilly and mountainous territory, with a vast extension of valleys in which several rivers flow. In the northern part of the territory, the landscape is characterized by rough and uninhabited topography, while in the southern part there is a gentler area and rich in scattered small settlements.
Much of the flat terrain is represented by the coastal plain and the valleys, such as the Aterno-Pescara and the Val di Sangro. Furthermore, an important part of the Maiella massif is also located within the province.
Orography of the Province of Chieti
The territory of the province of Chieti is characterized by the calcareous mass of the Maiella, the second highest mountain in the Apennine mountain range after Gran Sasso. The Maiella has a complex orography, with 61 mountains and 75 hills. Like most limestone massifs, the Maiella is rich in karst phenomena and poor in surface water. Meteoric waters appear downstream, with springs that sometimes reach powerful dimensions, such as those of the Verde river in Fara San Martino.
Hydrography of the Province of Chieti
The province of Chieti is very rich in water resources, predominantly underground, thanks to the karst phenomena of the mountains and in particular of the Maiella. On the surface there are numerous rivers, with the main ones being Aterno-Pescara, Sangro and Trigno, Alento (Abruzzo), Aventino (river), Foro (river) and Sinello.
