Porciano

Welcome to Porciano!

Hello everyone! Today, I will talk to you about Porciano, a beautiful hamlet of the municipality of Lamporecchio, in the province of Pistoia. This medieval village is located on the western slopes of Montalbano, at about 300 meters above sea level, with a breathtaking view of Valdinievole.

The origin of the name

Do you know where Porciano's name comes from? It seems that the most accredited hypothesis is that of linguist Silvio Pieri, who traces it back to the gens Porcia, an ancient Roman family that had settlements in this area. Interesting, isn't it?

Monuments and places of interest

But let's come to the monuments and places of interest in Porciano. The village is characterized by two medieval towers, called "Upper Tower" and "Lower Tower," which constitute the identifying symbol of the hamlet. They date back to the 1200s and were part of a defensive system to protect Valdinievole, together with the Vitoni Tower of Collececioli and the fortification of Montefiori Hill in the hamlet of San Baronto. Unfortunately, today only a part of them remains, estimated to be about 50% of the original, but they are still an unmissable attraction for those visiting Porciano.

The church of San Giorgio, dating back to the XIII century, is another wonder that you can't miss. It hosts various interesting paintings, including a Madonna and Child from 1520 attributed to the Pistoia painter Gerino Gerini.

And what do you think of the sundial designed and built in 2002? It is located in the green area of Porciano and is a truly unique and suggestive attraction.

Notes

I would like to point out that Porciano is part of the municipality of Lamporecchio and can be reached using the provincial road SP31. Unfortunately, there are not many road signs, but if you follow the signs for the hamlet of Santomato, you can't go wrong.

Other projects

If you still have time after visiting Porciano, I recommend discovering the many other attractions in the area. What do you think of taking a tour of Vinci, the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, or visiting the beautiful city of Pistoia?
