Lampedusa and Linosa: an insular municipality with an incredible climate

Physical geography

The municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa is located in the Agrigento free communal consortium in Sicily. It is a completely insular municipality, which includes the Sicilian archipelago of the Pelagie Islands. The territory of the municipality is composed of the islands of Lampedusa, Linosa, and Lampione.

Lampedusa and Lampione are of African origin, while Linosa is a volcanic island. The landscape of Lampedusa presents three distinct environments: the steppe, which covers the flat part of the island, the Mediterranean grassland in the valleys farther from the inhabited area, and the garigue in some valleys and coves on the north slope. Linosa, on the other hand, has a typical Mediterranean scrub flora.

The island of Lampedusa is 113 km from Africa and 205 km from Sicily (Porto Empedocle).

History

The islands of Lampedusa and Linosa were colonized in 1843 by the Bourbons. The municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa was established on August 31, 1875, and since then it has had a troubled history, especially due to the strong migratory flows coming from Tunisia and Libya.

In recent years, the municipality has been revalued from a tourist point of view.

Society

The population of the municipality is 6399 inhabitants as of January 1, 2014. 4% of the population consists of foreign residents, the majority of whom are Romanian.

The municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa has inspired several films in recent years, including "Respiro" and "Terraferma" by Emanuele Crialese and "Fire at Sea" by Gianfranco Rosi.

Anthropogenic geography

The main neighborhoods of the capital Lampedusa are Capo Ponente, Punta Parise, Sanguedolce, Albero Sole, Belvedere, Spiaggia dei Conigli, Aria Rossa, Cimitero Vecchio, and S. Gerlando.

Climate

Lampedusa and Linosa have an incredible climate - it is the municipality with the lowest number of heating degree days in Italy. In the Linosa meteorological station, winters are mild and not very rainy, while summers are hot but not too muggy.

Lampedusa and Linosa are therefore an excellent destination for those looking for a mild and pleasant climate in any season of the year. If you are looking for a place to escape from the winter cold, Lampedusa and Linosa could be perfect.
