San Donato

Welcome to San Donato, a hamlet of Lamon

Hello everyone! Today I'll talk about San Donato, a beautiful hamlet in the municipality of Lamon, in the province of Belluno. San Donato, or San Donà as it's called in the Lamonese dialect, is located along the glacial slope that overlooks the Senaiga valley and descends from Mount Coppolo. The village can be reached from both the Costa road and Mount Coppolo, as well as from Trentino via the Brocon Pass. San Donato is composed of numerous districts distributed throughout the village, and its communities border Lamon, Canal San Bovo, Castello Tesino and Cinte Tesino, constituting a natural bridge between these areas.

The history of San Donato

San Donato has a very ancient history, dating back to the Roman era as shown by the findings in the Piasentót locality and the presence of the Via Claudia Augusta. In the Middle Ages, San Donato was an important military base and was destroyed following the War of the League of Cambrai. Remaining semi-destroyed, it lost the ancient pievanale church and the castle. However, over time, the village recovered and today it's famous for its church and natural beauty. During the twentieth century, San Donato experienced a strong demographic decline due to the lack of adequate mountain policies, going from over a thousand inhabitants to few inhabitants who live here today. In 2005, the residents voted in favor of aggregation to neighboring Trentino, moving from Veneto to the Autonomous Province of Trento.

Monuments and places of interest

San Donato is famous for its natural beauty and the presence of numerous tourist attractions. Worth visiting are the karst caves of the Castello Tesino Cave, near the Senaiga stream at the bottom of the village, the waterfall in the Salton locality and the Castello Tesino Cave. Furthermore, San Donato is an ideal destination for trekking and mountain hiking enthusiasts. There are numerous excursions possible towards Mount Coppolo and the Lagorai chain. But the main attraction of San Donato is the church. The San Donato church boasts very remote origins and already existed in the sixteenth century. The current church preserves a canvas representing the Madonna with the Child, San Donato, San Pietro, San Vittore and Sant'Antonio Abate, attributable to Girolamo del Zocco, known as lo Zigantello.
