Lallio

The small town of Lallio

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a very interesting town in northern Italy, Lallio. With only 4104 inhabitants, it is one of the smallest towns in Italy and is located in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy. The town is only 5 kilometers away from Bergamo, making it very convenient for those who want to visit the city. Despite its size, Lallio has a very interesting history.

History of Lallio

Lallio has Roman origins, as evidenced by the name itself derived from the Latin ''alea'', which means dice. It is said that in the area there were small settlements used as places of entertainment, where legionnaires gathered to play dice during the winter period. The municipal coat of arms depicts a gaming chessboard. Moreover, it is believed that there was a castle used as a lookout and defense of the city of Bergamo.

During the Middle Ages, Lallio saw an increase in population and, consequently, an increase in housing. The first written document attesting to the existence of the village dates back to 11 September 875. At that time, the territory was under the control of the Holy Roman Empire, but the power was later entrusted to the diocese of Bergamo. In the village, numerous fortified buildings were erected for defensive purposes, including the castle.

The strategic position of Lallio made it very coveted by the powers of the time, including the Suardi family, and there were several battles and fires. During the 15th century, the village was placed under the domination of the Republic of Venice, which managed to improve the social and economic conditions of the area. In addition, irrigation canals were built that improved agricultural production.

During World War II, Lallio hosted a concentration camp for soldiers and deserters captured by the fascists or Nazis.

What to see in Lallio

Despite its size, Lallio has some interesting tourist attractions to see. For example, the Suardi Castle, built in the 14th century, was rebuilt over the years after the fires that destroyed it. Today it is used for events and exhibitions. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, located inside the castle, was reconstructed after the fire in the 16th century and retains beautiful frescoes.

On the municipal territory of Lallio, there is also a beautiful natural park, the Parco delle Cornelle, which hosts numerous species of animals and plants.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Lallio is a small town that has a very interesting history and some tourist attractions to visit. If you are passing through Bergamo and have some free time, I suggest you visit this town. You will not regret it!
