Vaccolino

Discovering Vaccolino

Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about a small rural town located in the province of Ferrara called Vaccolino, but which is also called "Al Vaculìn" or "Il Mott" in the Ferrara dialect by its inhabitants. The town has a population of about 600 people and is divided between the municipalities of Comacchio and Lagosanto. The state road 309 Romea, which connects Venice and Ravenna, runs through the entire town.

History

Vaccolino was once known as San Giacomo or Le Celle. This is because the town was divided into different villages, such as that of the church of San Giacomo, the cell, the blacksmiths' village, the priests' village and others. These united villages formed "Vacolinum" in Latin. The town was an important stopping and resting place for travelers along the ancient Popilia road, which is now the state road 309 Romea. Additionally, Vaccolino was the center of meditation for the pompous friars who lived in the cells of the town, but of which today there are almost no remains except for a few ruins.

Once, in the small town of Comacchio and Lagosanto, there were also some famous hillocks of sand. These were small natural sand hills present in only a few other places like the Mesolana fraction of Monticelli and other towns of the Codigorese area. This is also why the inhabitants of Vaccolino call the town "Il Mott". In the 1960s and 70s, most of the sand dunes were levelled to make way for new construction.

Furthermore, in the rural area to the east of the state road 309 Romea is the Bertuzzi valley, the smallest part of the Comacchio valleys.
