An Etruscan Necropolis in Monteroni

Hi everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a truly interesting discovery located in the municipality of Ladispoli, precisely in Monteroni. Here an Etruscan necropolis has been discovered, which has yielded several tumulus tombs. This place is of great historical and archaeological importance, as it has allowed the reconstruction of the life of the ancient Etruscans and the development of the settlement of 'Alsium'.

The history of the necropolis

The Monteroni necropolis was used from the 7th century BC to the full Roman age. Many important figures of the time were buried here, and the tumulus tombs were decorated with valuable furnishings. Among these stands out the small plate bearing the first Latin alphabet dated to the 3rd century BC, which represents one of the most important testimonies of the time.

The excavations

The first and only excavations were carried out by the Duchess of Sermoneta, Teresa Caetani, back in 1839. Unfortunately, most of the tombs were destroyed due to neglect and the passage of time. Today, only one large tumulus and one partially destroyed remain.

A treasure to be discovered

Despite the necropolis not being in perfect condition, its historical importance is immense, and there are still many treasures to be discovered. For this reason, it is important that the Monteroni necropolis is preserved and protected, so that future generations can admire this testimony of the rich history of antiquity.

Conclusions

In conclusion, the Etruscan necropolis of Monteroni represents a mandatory stop for all history and archaeology enthusiasts. Visiting such an ancient and symbolic place is a unique experience, which leads you to discover and better understand our history and the origins of our culture.
