La Spezia

The History of Spezia Calcio

Hello friends, let me tell you about the history of Spezia Calcio, an Italian football team located in La Spezia, Liguria. Founded in 1906, the team has gone through many changes to reach Serie A, the highest division in the Italian football championship, in 2020.

From origins to the 1930s

At the beginning, the football section of the "Sport Club Spezia" was just a pastime for passing sailors, but on 20th November 1911, the "Spezia Football Club" was officially founded. Led by the first president Francesco Corio, the team won the Ligurian group of the Promotion Championship and moved up to the First Category.

The history of Spezia Calcio: from its birth to Serie A.

The 1940s and the national title win

During the 1940s, the team won the Divisione Nazionale 1944, even though the victory was achieved by the Gruppo Sportivo 42º Corpo dei Vigili del Fuoco 1943-44, a team that replaced Spezia, inactive due to war reasons, by enlisting its footballers. In 2002, the title was recognized by FIGC as an "honorary" title but not equivalent to the "scudetto".

The 1950s and 60s

In the 1950s and 60s, Spezia played between the Second and Third series of the Italian football championship. The team had a difficult period and did not manage to achieve significant results, but it always had the support of its fans.

The 1970s and 80s

In the early 1970s, the team had a good season, finishing fourth in the Serie C championship. In 1977, Spezia played in Serie B but immediately relegated to the third series.

In the 1980s, the team went through another difficult period and played mainly in Serie C1. Despite this, fans have never stopped supporting the team.

The 1990s and 2000s

In the 1990s, Spezia mainly played in Serie C2, but managed to win the championship in the 1994-1995 season. In the 2000s, the team continued to play in the third and fourth series of the Italian football championship. However, in 2008, Spezia was refounded and had a surge towards success.

The rebirth

In 2008, Spezia was refounded as "Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Spezia Calcio 2008". The team began playing in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione, winning the championship in the 2011-2012 season and achieving promotion to Serie B, where they made good performances in the championship of the 2019-2020 season.

Finally, in 2020, Spezia reached the highest division in Italian football, Serie A. Despite a difficult start, the team was able to reach the fifteenth position in the 2020-2021 season.

The playing field

Spezia plays its home matches at Alberto Picco Stadium, a sports facility built in the late 1960s with a capacity of approximately 10,000 spectators.

The team colors

The team's reference social color is white, accompanied by black. This was decided in honor of Pro Vercelli 1892, a team that played an important role in the history of Italian football.

Here is a brief chronicle of Spezia Calcio, a team that has gone through many difficulties but has been able to rise again and compete at the national level. We are sure that its fans will always be with it and we hope that it will achieve many successes in the future.
