Origins of the Name
The origin of the name Jelsi is unclear. It is believed that the oldest name of the town was Tibiczan, of Bulgarian origin, which was then transcribed in various versions over the centuries. The last name given during the Kingdom of Two Sicilies was Ielsi, which has remained until today.
History
Ancient History
The territory of Jelsi has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It is believed to have been frequented by hunter-gatherer populations, thanks to the ease of hunting in the area. In fact, various historical remains found by the local historian Vincenzo d'Amico demonstrate the presence of ancient settlements. The first real population that settled in the area were the Siculi, then replaced by the Osci, and finally by the Carricini. The first original nucleus of the town was probably formed during the 5th century BC, by populations of Etrusco-Campana culture.
Modern History
In 1562, the town had 169 families. The village took shape in the 13th century under the leadership of Bertrand Beaumont together with Gildone. After his death, the construction of a mausoleum was born which became the Angevin castle. Throughout the modern age, the town was under the civil and judicial administration of Capitanata.
Contemporary History
In 1805, the violent earthquake in Molise destroyed part of the region, but Jelsi was slightly damaged, thanks to a supposed divine miracle. Since then, the grain festival has been celebrated. In 1806, the municipality was separated from Capitanata and added to the county of Molise. In 2002, the coat of arms and flag of Jelsi were granted by decree of the President of the Republic.
Monuments and Places of Interest
Carafa Palace
Carafa Palace is the main monument of the town. Originally a medieval castle, it now presents the traces and architectural styles of the refurbishments following the seismic events that have marked the territory over time. It has an irregular rectangular plan, with basalt bastions and a central tower. The building was the residence of the De Beaumont, Pinabello, and finally, the Carafa, who remained owners until the mid-19th century.
