Ivano-Fracena

A Small Hamlet at the Foot of Mount Lefre

Hello friends! Today, I want to talk about Ivano Fracena, a hamlet in Castel Ivano in the autonomous province of Trento, which has about 338 inhabitants. Located at the foot of Mount Lefre, this hamlet boasts the Castle of Ivano, which dates back to the Lombard period and whose ownership of the surrounding lands gave birth to the hamlet. But the history of Ivano Fracena is very interesting, and that's why I want to share it with you, dividing the text into three sections.

The charm of Ivano Fracena: history and curiosities.

History

Middle Ages

The two hamlets of Ivano and Fracena were born very close to the Castle in the Middle Ages. Free and armed men, called "arimanni" in the ancient Germanic and Lombard law, were granted the land to cultivate in exchange for their service in defense of the Castle. The Castle was indeed the historical matrix of these two hamlets, determining their location.

Modern Age

In 1496, Emperor Maximilian I granted jurisdiction over the Castle of Ivano to the noble house of Wolchenstein di Rodenegg, who ruled it until the First World War. The castellany of Ivano promoted the penetration and centuries-old disputes for possession of the territories beyond the Brenta river, namely the Marcesina plain and Mount Frizzon, now the border between the provinces of Trento and Vicenza.

20th century

The oldest part of Ivano is located near the Castle. During the 20th century, isolated buildings were built and today the hamlet no longer resembles the original inhabited nucleus made up of "Case vece". Fracena, on the other hand, is located in a natural basin at the foot of Mount Lefre, and is characterized by buildings located along the road that cuts longitudinally through the hamlet.

The End of the Municipality of Ivano Fracena

The Municipality of Ivano Fracena existed until June 30, 2016, after which it was merged into the new Municipality of Castel Ivano, following the positive outcome of the consultative referendum held on March 20, 2016. It was not a scattered municipality, since the municipal headquarters were located in the inhabited center consisting of the two localities that gave the name to the entity.

Conclusions

We have come to the end of my story about Ivano Fracena, a hamlet with very interesting historical features. I hope you enjoyed this little visit, and that, if you have the opportunity, you can visit the hamlet and discover all of its beauties firsthand. See you soon, my friends!
