Itala

Discover Itala, a small Sicilian town

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a hidden gem of Sicily: Itala. It is a small town of 1492 inhabitants located in the metropolitan city of Messina, with an interesting history behind it.

Physical geography

Itala is located northwest of Messina and borders other municipalities such as Alì and Fiumedinisi. Its territory extends to the Ionian Sea to the east and also hosts several hamlets, including Marina and Croce. If you want to take a walk along the coast, I recommend taking the provincial road 29 that connects Marina with the center of Itala.

Origin of the name

The name "Itala" has sparked various theories about its origin. According to historian Giuseppe Buonfiglio, the name would derive from a mythical founder called "King Italo", son of Enotro. However, Danish archaeologist Frederik Poulsen has argued that the name "Italy" was first used in the 5th century BC in a location near Messina, where a population of "Enotri" lived. The name "Italy" was then extended to the whole country, but the original name remained in the Itala area.

Monuments and places of interest

Itala hosts various religious architectural works, including the Arab-Norman church of Saints Peter and Paul. Built in 1094, it presents an imposing basilica structure with three naves divided into four bays. The covering of the central nave has a double sloping form with wooden trusses, while the presbytery rises above the level of the hall and presents three semicircular apses visible also from the outside.

A complex history

Itala has not always existed as an autonomous municipality. In 1928, it was suppressed and aggregated to Scaletta Zanclea. Only in 1947, it managed to regain its autonomy. This complex history is still reflected today in the culture and traditions of the town.

Daily life

Itala has only a few thousand inhabitants, but cultural and social activities are not lacking. I suggest you try the local cuisine, including specialties based on fresh fish and arancini. In addition, the town hosts several festivals and fairs throughout the year, such as the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul in June and the Sagra delle Frittedde in September.

Conclusions

Itala is a small Sicilian town that can offer a lot to curious visitors. If you are looking for a quiet place to relax and discover Sicilian culture, Itala can be the right choice. With its interesting history, monuments, and culinary traditions, there is only one thing left to do: have fun!
