Barza: a small village with a great history

History of Barza
Barza has a very interesting history. In the past, it was an ancient municipality in the Province of Milan. In 1751, it was registered as a village of 102 inhabitants. In 1786, Barza became part of the fleeting Province of Varese for a period of five years, before continuing to change administrative references in 1791, 1798, and 1799. By 1805, when the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed, the population of Barza had been reduced to only 83 inhabitants, due to emigration to nearby more dynamic centers. As a result, the tiny community was suppressed in 1809 by the king of the French Napoleon and annexed to Ispra. However, with the return of the Austrians in 1814, the Municipality of Barza was reinstated and began to recover. In 1853, Barza had 176 inhabitants, rising to 213 in 1861. After a slight demographic growth in the second half of the 19th century, the poor economic dynamics once again favored emigration. In 1928, fascism decided to propose the ancient Napoleonic model and establish the definitive annexation to Ispra.

Although it is a fraction of Ispra, Barza has a well-defined identity and a very strong community spirit. Its population is about 200 inhabitants and, despite becoming part of Ispra, it is still very attached to its historical roots.
