Hello friends!

Today I will talk to you about Turin, an Italian city that is very dear to me. With its 842,472 inhabitants as of October 31, 2022, Turin is the fourth largest city in Italy by population and is the capital of the Piedmont region and the Metropolitan City of Turin.

A city rich in art, culture, and history

Turin is a hub of art, culture, and history. Did you know that it is one of the largest university, artistic, tourist, scientific, and cultural centers in our country? The city also boasts some areas and buildings protected by UNESCO, such as the World Heritage Site of the Sabauda residences in Piedmont and the Po Hills Biosphere Reserve.

A two-thousand-year-old history

Turin is a city with a two-thousand-year-old history. Founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, it was transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus in the 1st century BC. It then followed a period of Ostrogoth domination, before becoming the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563, Turin became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy and, since 1720, it has been the de facto (and later formally) capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia. The city was also the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1865.

A city of great international importance

Turin has earned a prominent place internationally thanks to its major cultural, sporting, and economic events. It has been the site of the International Exposition in 1911, the XX Winter Olympics in 2006, the ATP Finals since 2021, and the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. Did you know that Turin is also the city of vermouth, gianduiotti, grissini, and espresso coffee? Moreover, it is the hub of the Italian automotive industry, financial services sector, publishing, information technology, food and wine, cinema, industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence.

A global city in the "Gamma" category

Turin is a constantly growing global city. Thanks to its great economic, cultural, and scientific significance, the city has been classified as a global city in the "Gamma" category. Turin is the third Italian city in this ranking, after Milan and Rome.

The physical geography of Turin

Turin is located in the plain delimited by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po. The Po River runs through the city from south to north. Turin is also surrounded by some Alpine valleys, including the Val di Susa, the Lanzo Valleys, and the Val Sangone. The city is a transit point for the Frejus tunnels, which connect it with nearby France.

In conclusion, Turin is an Italian city rich in history, culture, industry, and innovation. I hope this brief tale has intrigued you and invites you to visit Turin, if you haven't already. You won't regret it!
