Exploring the Island of Sant'Antonio: history, nature and curiosities.

History and symbols

The name of the municipality derives from the conformation of the marshy land, where there are islands separated by channels. In 1545, the Isimbardi marquises settled farmers for the cultivation of fertile lands. The Island was part of Lomellina until 1800, when Napoleon removed it from the Province of Lomellina and included it in the Municipality of Alluvioni Cambiò in the Department of Marengo. It became a municipality in 1818, by decree of the king of Sardinia, who simultaneously brought it back to Lomellina. The definitive transfer to Piedmont was decreed in 1878.

The coat of arms and the gonfalon of the municipality of Isola Sant'Antonio were granted in 1983.

Places of interest

The Church of Sant'Antonio da Padova, located in the center of the village, is the main place of worship and historical interest. It underwent restoration works in recent years, but still retains the architectural features of the period in which it was built.

Demographic evolution

The Island of Sant'Antonio has experienced a steady increase in population, reaching its peak in 1961 with 1,352 inhabitants. In the following years, the number of residents decreased, but in the last two decades there has been a slight increase.

Administration

The municipal administration has been led by various mayors and city councils over the years. A table summarizes the succession of appointments.
