Isnello: Natural Treasure of Sicily

Origins of the name and history

Regarding the etymology of the name of the town, there is no unanimous pronouncement on the matter. It is known with certainty that the name derives from the characteristics of the river that crosses it, the hypothetical voices from which it originated are of various kinds, from the Syriac ''hassin'' which means ''cold river'' to the Greek ''asines'' which indicates the innocuity of the stream. The period of its restoration in Roman times and in the early centuries of the Christian era is not very clear, while it is known that the Isnello area in this period was called ''Menzil Al-Hamàr'', which means ''fortified village''.

Middle Ages

The medieval period represents a fundamental importance for Isnello. Count Ruggero, after defeating the Arabs, founded the new village of Isnello, which was aggregated to the diocese of Messina while maintaining direct dominion. Ruggero II, the first King of Sicily, included Isnello in the new diocese with the consent of the Archbishop of Messina, maintaining its direct jurisdiction. Later, the dominion over Isnello and the nearby Gratteri was first temporarily granted to the Archbishop of Palermo by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia and then, after the latter's death, Martino granted the barony of Isnello to Abbo Filangeri, Alcaide of Cefalù who ceded it for the County of San Marco.

Modern age

In the fifteenth century, the knight Niccolò Abbate became baron of Isnello, who in September 1377 sold the barony of Isnello to Francesco II Ventimiglia and Consolo, count of Geraci. However, his successor Antonio Ventimiglia lost his rights to the lands because he was accused of treason, which were acquired by the Royal Treasury.
