Inzago: A Small Municipality in Lombardy

The Physical Geography of Inzago
Inzago is situated in the region of Martesana and is crossed by the Naviglio della Martesana river. This river divides the town into two parts and is bordered and crossed to the north by the Villoresi Canal. The Naviglio Martesana has attracted nobles and bourgeoisie in history, who built their summer residences, which are still a valuable asset for the community today. Many of these residences have been renovated in recent decades and have become places of interest, such as Villa Aitelli, Villa Magistretti, Villa Rey, and Villa Facheris (now the headquarters of Banca BCC). Along the Naviglio Martesana (towards Milan) stands the Monasterolo, a small religious building of great importance to the local community.
Special Events in Inzago
The village festival of Inzago takes place every second weekend of October. This festival serves to evoke the origins of the town and its traditions. The major attractions are the livestock fair that takes place on Monday and the mass with the procession that sets off from the square. From 2008 to 2019, Inzago also hosted the Vintage Roots Festival in Piazza Maggiore, which recreated the American atmosphere of the 1950s through costumes, stalls, and music. It was truly a fantastic event and much appreciated by the community.
Curiosities about Inzago
Inzago has a very particular curiosity worth mentioning. Inside the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is the first and oldest copy of the Holy Shroud. It is incredible to think that this small town has such an important copy of the Holy Shroud among its attractions.
Society in Inzago
Inzago has recorded an increase in population over the years. In 1650, it had 1751 inhabitants, in 1771 they were 1837, in 1805 they were 1929, in 1809 they were 2071, in 1811 after the annexation of Masate and Basiano they were 2955 and in 1853 they were 3576. Inzago also has a community of foreign people. According to ISTAT data as of December 31, 2015, the resident foreign population was 873 people. The most present nationalities were Romania (199), Albania (135), and Morocco (124).
Infrastructure and Transport in Inzago
In the past, Inzago hosted a tram stop of the Fornaci-Treviglio-Caravaggio tramline that followed the route of the "Postale Veneta" road, then via Cavour, to continue along via Roma diagonally crossing the central Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. Today, Inzago is served by suburban and interurban bus lines managed by MilanoSudEst-Trasporti.
