Inverigo

Inverigo: a Brianza town between nature and history

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Inverigo, a picturesque Brianza town located in the province of Como, in Lombardy. With its 9116 inhabitants, Inverigo is a concentrically developed urban town that extends along the Lambro river. Thanks to its location in western Como Brianza, it is also famous for being a climatic station.

The geography of Inverigo

As I mentioned earlier, Inverigo is a city immersed in nature, with some territories included in the Regional Park of the Lambro Valley. Furthermore, the urban landscape has developed around the ancient residences of the lords of the different fractions of the municipality, which include Villa Romanò, Romanò Brianza, Cremnago, S. Maria, La Fornacetta, Bigoncio, and Guiano.

Inverigo: nature and history in a town of Brianza.

The origin of the name

Curious about the meaning of the city's name? Inverigo derives from the fusion of the locational preposition "in" with the ancient Celtic toponym "wāri-ik-(o)", which means "place or settlement to the east". In a document dated 996, the place was indicated as "Euvuirico" or "Euvurico". Some theories suggest a possible connection to water, as evidenced by the term "Aiguerigium" in a document from the twelfth century, or the version "Imbericius", which would derive from the contraction of the Latin terms "imber" (rain) and "vicus" (cluster of houses). However, a theory that refers to the Latin expression "In vere vicus", indicating a "vicus" in spring, seems less likely.

The history of Inverigo

The history of Inverigo dates back to Roman times when the town was crossed by the "via Regina" and "via Mediolanum-Bellasium". Traces of this past have been found within the estate of Villa Mezzanotte. During the Lordship of Milan, Inverigo was mentioned in the "Statutes of the waters and roads of the countryside of Milan made in 1346". Subsequently, it was ruled by the Marliani family from 1450 to 1683, with the exception of a brief period in which the locality passed into the hands of the Giussani family. In 1683, Inverigo passed to the Crivelli family, which retained the privilege of the feud until the eighteenth century. In 1751, the municipality of Inverigo also administered numerous hamlets.
