Tavarnuzze: history, geography and growth of a hamlet in the Chianti region.

History

The name Tavarnuzze originates from the fact that in the past, as a crossing point, there were numerous inns for travelers. Initially, the village was known as "Tavernuzze" because the first buildings were taverns, located on the right bank of the Pescina, a stream that descends from Impruneta. Tavarnuzze was part of the Impruneta and Giogoli districts. In the late 19th century, there were numerous shops, a tram station, a school, and a significant straw industry. Additionally, there were mining activities in the Poggio a' Grilli and Montebuoni quarries and agriculture was flourishing. In 1893, the tramway that connected Tavarnuzze to Porta Romana was inaugurated, but the activity ceased in 1935. In the 20th century, the village grew and reached three thousand inhabitants. In 1955, the construction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church began, which was consecrated on September 19th, 1959.

Growth of the village

Following the construction of the church, there was the birth of the Parochial Nursery School, rooms for the Catholic Circle, and the Cinema Hall inaugurated in 1967. In the 1960s and 1970s, there was a residential building expansion and the construction of the Florence-Siena expressway, which greatly changed the life of the village. In 1966, the flood caused the collapse of the bridge that connected the Cassia road with the quarries of Poggio a' Grilli, which was not rebuilt. This event marked the end of the important recreational activity present in the area, which offered clay pigeon shooting and refreshment points.
