Monteleto

Monteleto: a small hamlet in Umbria

Hello everyone! Today I would like to talk to you about Monteleto, a beautiful communitarian hamlet located a few kilometers from Gubbio, in the province of Perugia. Its population, according to Istat data from 2001, counts around 161 residents. The hamlet is located at an altitude of 454 m above sea level, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding nature.

History

Monteleto is a place of great historical value, dating back to Roman times. It is said, in fact, that an important religious center existed here where both Christianity and Paganism were practiced. Testifying to this would be the presence of a church and a temple dedicated to the goddess Diana. Unfortunately, the temple was destroyed in an unspecified era, but we can still admire the Church of Santa Illuminata, located in the center of the village, as the only remaining place of worship. Historically, the name 'Monteleto' derives from 'Monte di Leto'.

Economy and Events

The economy of this hamlet is mainly based on agriculture, with particular attention to the cultivation of olive oil and vines. Moreover, Monteleto hosts several food and wine themed events throughout the year, where visitors can try local products and discover the true taste of Umbria.

Monuments and Artistic Places

Monteleto also boasts the presence of some historical buildings of great artistic and cultural value. Villa Benveduti, for example, was perhaps built in the post-medieval era, and it develops on three floors surrounded by an Italian garden. Furthermore, in the residence you can admire a private chapel dedicated to St. Andrew Avellino, in which there is a canvas by Reposati, a student of Lapis, which depicts the typical iconography of the Saint.

Sports

Monteleto also offers opportunities for sports lovers. Near the parish house there is a football field, where local matches of the former team "Victoria Mocaiana" are held. Moreover, the parish club 'C.P. Mocaiana' forms football teams of 5 and 7, which take part in the local tournaments organized by the C.S.I. (Italian Sports Center), Gubbio Committee.

Conclusions

In summary, Monteleto is a charming place immersed in nature, rich in history, art, and culture. With its strategic location, it offers the possibility to fully enjoy the beauty of Umbria, between breathtaking landscapes, genuine products, and centuries-old traditions. If you haven't had the chance to visit this wonderful place yet, I recommend that you do so as soon as possible!
