Colpalombo: a journey through history and tradition

Colpalombo is a small medieval village located in the province of Perugia, belonging to the municipality of Gubbio. With a population of only 196 inhabitants, this place is a hidden gem of the Umbria region. In this article, I will take you on a journey to discover the history, traditions, monuments, and sports of Colpalombo.

History

The first records of the Castle, or ''Castrum Collis Palumbi'', date back to the XII century, but it already existed as a fortified village with walls and a tower since the XI century. In the first half of the XV century, the fortifications were restored and expanded, and in 1465 a hospice was located inside the village. In the XVI century, the Della Rovere Dukes of Urbino were interested in preserving the village, which was in the eugubino territory annexed to the Duchy of Urbino, because it had been abandoned since the times of Federico da Montefeltro, who also used it as a rest point during his hunting expeditions. In the XIX and XX centuries, the structure of the small historic centre was transformed, but its past is still evident.

Economy and Festivals

The economy of Colpalombo is based on agriculture and the exploitation of woodland. But there are also some traditions that are still alive in this village. For example, in the days preceding June 24th, Saint John the Baptist, flowers and fragrant plants were collected to make the so-called ''acqua fiorata'' with which one should wash their face in the morning, according to tradition. Additionally, during the last weekend of August, there is a medieval festival with a parade in historical clothes, jesters, fire shows, and a medieval dinner. During the two days, the archery challenge sees the archers of the castle compete against those of the countryside.

Monuments and Artistic Places

One of the main monuments of Colpalombo is the Castle, built in the XII century. There are traces of tower foundations, enclosing walls, and the entrance gate. The Church of Madonna del Trebbio is another important attraction of the village. Inside, you can admire a fresco by Matteo da Gualdo (XV century). Finally, the Church of S. Egidio contains a painting and a wooden statue depicting Saint Anthony Abbot, both of great value.

Sports

Colpalombo hosts two sports associations. AS Plinio Colpalombo deals with football, while the Historical Archers Company "Castrum Collis Palumbi" A.S.D. is dedicated to historical and traditional archery, medieval re-enactments, and is affiliated with CSEN, AICS, and FITAST.
