Casino di Terra
Welcome to Casino di Terra
Casino di Terra is a small hamlet located between the Italian municipalities of Guardistallo and Montecatini Val di Cecina, in the province of Pisa, Tuscany. Located along the Val Cecina State Road 68, the hamlet consists of a few houses and is located near the train station.
Pleasant climate all year round
Casino di Terra enjoys a mild and pleasant climate all year round, with average temperatures that never drop below 10°C even in the coldest month (January) and reach maximum peaks around 30°C in July and August.
Millennia-long history
The territory of Casino di Terra boasts a millennia-long history, as evidenced by the presence of ancient Etruscan settlements, including a tholos (tomb) dating back to the 6th century BC discovered in 1932 and now reconstructed in Cecina.
In the Middle Ages, two castles were built in the area, the castle of Pastina and the castle and monastery of Pulicciano. With the construction of the Cecina-Volterra railway in 1862, the area became a stopping station for carts loaded with goods pulled by horses.
The Casino di Terra railway station takes its name from a stone and straw cottage located nearby, which was frequented by travelers. In the 1870s, the station joined the Monterufoli Railway, mainly used for the transport of lignite and chalcedonies from the Monterufoli quarries.
Art and culture
In Casino di Terra and the Mocajo area, you can appreciate art and culture, as seen in the film "Baci e abbracci" (1999) by Paolo Virzì, set in our hamlet.
