History

That year, Raniero di Cono donated the castle to the monastery of San Salvatore alla Majella, which had the power to levy taxes on the church of San Clemente in Badia. After some disputes with Trasmondo of Chieti, the castle became the property of the Letto family in the 13th century and, over the years, was divided among various heirs.
After the earthquake of 1706, Comino lost most of its ancient treasures, reducing itself to a small group of peasant houses. But despite the difficulties, today Comino still represents an architectural and historical gem.
Ancient churches
Among the attractions of Comino there are many ancient churches, the largest of which was the Church of San Clemente in Badia, founded in 654 by the Galeroni family of Guardiagrele. In 1056 it was donated to San Salvatore alla Majella, which managed its properties for many centuries. Over the years, this church has suffered many damages and has almost completely disappeared. However, some remains are still visible in the locality of La Foce.
Another very important church was the Church of Santa Maria de Plano, whose jurisdiction was given to the monastery of San Martino in Valle by Pope Pasquale II. Unfortunately, even this church has fallen into ruin, and today only its ruins are visible.
Finally, there was a group of churches of Santa Lucia della Strada and Santa Lucia di Comino. These seats were part of the abbey of San Clemente di Comino, located on the royal tratturo of Guardiagrele. Now only the Church of Santa Lucia della Strada remains, which has continued to exist over the years.
Comino today
Today, Comino has become one of the most interesting villages in the province of Chieti. With its ancient architecture, it offers residents and tourists many opportunities to discover. In addition to the ancient churches, Comino is also home to an elementary school and a parish dedicated to St. Joseph the Worker.
