The physical geography of Guardiagrele

A territory between majestic mountains and gentle hills

Guardiagrele is located on a long promontory lying on the eastern slopes of the Maiella and delimited on three sides by steep ridges. To the west of the city, towards the Maiella, there are limestone rocks, with rugged valleys and numerous forests. Going towards the sea, the reliefs become increasingly gentle. There are no particularly relevant rivers in the area, but the numerous watercourses are mostly torrents coming from the mountain, such as the Dendalo and the Venna, which flow into the Foro. However, the city has experienced many earthquakes throughout its history, including the one in L'Aquila in 2009, which caused some damage to homes and monuments.
