History

Guardia Perticara has a very interesting and fascinating past. In ancient times, it hosted the Enotri, ancient inhabitants of the region, as demonstrated by the grave goods dating back to the 5th century BC found in the area of San Vito. In the 10th century, the village was influenced by the Greek-Orthodox culture, as shown by the findings of Basilian caves.

Later on, the village was destroyed by the Saracens and remained uninhabited for a long time. In 1237 Guardia Perticara (then called "castrum Perticari") was part of the diocese of Tricarico during the reign of Frederick II of Swabia. In the 15th century, the village passed into the hands of the De Marra, lords of Stigliano, and in the 16th century, it was the turn of Carafa. In 1652 a Franciscan convent dedicated to Saint Anthony was founded in the city, while in 1657 a plague epidemic killed over 500 people. In the 18th century, Guardia Perticara became part of the department of Maratea as a fiefdom of the Marquis d'Altavilla, later passed to the Spinelli family, who kept it until 1806. In 1857 an earthquake destroyed the city and caused 85 deaths, while in 1980 the population of Guardia Perticara was hit by the Irpinia earthquake.
