Gualdo Tadino played an important role during the Gothic-Byzantine conflict, in which the Byzantine general Narses defeated the Goths' army led by King Badwila, also known as Totila. This battle marked the end of the Goths in Italy.
With the arrival of the Lombards, the city became part of the Duchy of Spoleto. In 996 the city was finally destroyed by Otto III of Saxony, but the inhabitants took refuge in Val di Gorgo at the foot of Serrasanta.
