Hello Grumo Appula!
Hello friends, today we will talk about Grumo Appula, a beautiful city in Puglia. With a population of 12,124 inhabitants, it is located about 16 km southwest of Bari and has been awarded the honorary titles of City and Garibaldian City. Let's discover more about its geography, origins and history.
Physical geography
The territory of Grumo Appula extends for about 81 square km and part of it is within the Alta Murgia National Park. The municipal pine forest Lagopetto is one of the park's attractions. Thanks to its climatic and morphological characteristics, Grumo Appula is also ideal for the cultivation of olive groves and vineyards.
Origins of the name
The first element of the city's name has uncertain origins: some trace it back to the Greek term "drùmon" (oak), others to the Latin "grumum" (cluster of houses). The second part of the name (added only in 1863) refers to the historical region of Apulia.
History
Grumo Appula arose as an Apulian center in pre-Roman times. Italic burials and Greek and Roman coins have been found in the territory. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Grumo Appula became part of the Ostrogothic and Byzantine kingdoms. Only briefly ruled by the Lombards, it fell under Norman domination in the 13th century. In 1410, it was sold to Pietro Busio de Senis. During the 16th century, in the time of Philip IV of Spain, the fief belonged to the Kingdom of Naples. In 1715, it became the property of the Caracciolo family, before being declared a royal city in 1800.
Symbols
The coat of arms of Grumo Appula was recognized by decree of the head of the government on January 12, 1935 and subsequently granted with DPR on January 19, 1999. In the shield of the Samnite shape, an oak stands in the left partition, while in the right one, three crescent moons appear, one on a red field and two on a blue field.
