Principina a Mare is a hamlet in the municipality of Grosseto, located on the Maremma coast in Tuscany. Principina a Mare was born as a small village of fishermen and shepherds. In 1961 the inhabitants of the center were nine, while the hamlet counted 340 people. In the following years there was a demographic increase, especially in the context of holiday tourism. In 1981 the inhabited center had 64 inhabitants, rising to 114 in 1991 and 150 in 2001. In 2011, however, the inhabitants of the center decreased to 134.
Economy: tourism
Tourism is the main source of income for Principina a Mare. During the summer season, the hamlet is quite busy due to its proximity to the mouth of the Ombrone river and the Maremma Natural Park. The medium-category campsite and high-category hotels host tourists from various parts of Italy and Europe. In July and August, the highest number of tourist arrivals is recorded, with peak weeks near the Ferragosto holiday. The clientele mainly comes from the northern regions of Italy, from the central-eastern Tuscan cities, from the Netherlands, Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
