Braccagni was founded in 1846, when the Montepescali resident Giuseppe Braccagni opened a post station in the area along the Via Aurelia. In 1864, the village began to take shape around Braccagni's post office with the opening of the Tirrenica railway and the construction of the Montepescali Station at the foot of the Montepescali hill. In 1911, a second nucleus, Braccagni Nuovo, was built, with the Pieraccini Palace, a mill and a tavern, and in 1922 the first electrical substation was built. In 1940, the church of San Guglielmo of Aquitaine was built, and in 1954 the elementary school and sports field were built, giving the village the appearance of a modern rural village.
Monuments and places of interest
Braccagni is rich in monuments and places of interest, including the church of San Guglielmo of Aquitaine, the chapel of Sant'Uberto and the original Braccagni, built by Giuseppe Braccagni in the XIX century. The church of San Guglielmo of Aquitaine, designed by Ernesto Ganelli, was consecrated in 1940 and elevated to parish the following year. It was the subject of a recent restoration in 2014. The chapel of Sant'Uberto, built in the 1920s, is located in the countryside of the village and was commissioned by the Guicciardini and Corsi-Salviati families, owners of the estate, as a noble chapel. The original Braccagni, built by Giuseppe Braccagni in the XIX century as a tavern and post station, is still visible along the Aurelia road.
Civil architecture
In addition to religious architecture, Braccagni is home to some important civil architecture. The Pieraccini Palace, built in 1911, is located at the corner of Via Aurelia and via dei Garibaldini and was the residence of the well-known local Pieraccini family.
