Physical Geography

Grosseto: discover the largest city in Tuscany!

The Territory

Grosseto is located in the heart of the Maremma grossetana, an alluvial plain that stretches for many kilometers. The city is close to the coast and overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea. Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare are the two closest municipal fractions to the sea, just 12 km from the city center.

Lake Prile

Grosseto was once covered by Lake Prile, which occupied a large part of the flat area. This lake, with marshy characteristics, is now almost disappeared due to the effects of eighteenth-century reclamation carried out by the Lorraine family, which were definitively completed by the fascist government.

Roselle Thermal Baths

In the north-eastern part of the municipal territory, there is Roselle, a fraction located near the archaeological site of Roselle dating back to the Etruscan-Roman era. Here is the Roselle Thermal Baths with sulfur water, which has the same nature and origin as the Saturnia thermal baths and other thermal baths in the hills of Albegna and Fiora.

Ombrone River

In the eastern and southern territory flows the Ombrone River, which borders the fraction of Istia d'Ombrone and then reaches some areas of Grosseto such as San Martino, Alberino, and Crespi. This area is particularly fascinating because the mouth of the river is located within the Maremma Natural Park, just south of Principina a Mare.

Diaccia Botrona Natural Reserve

The marshy area of Diaccia Botrona is located in the western part of the municipal territory, where the ancient Lake Prile is present. This area is an important nature reserve where you can observe many species of birds.

Maremma Natural Park

Grosseto also includes the south-western part of the Maremma Natural Park, where you can visit the Padule della Trappola and admire the splendid panoramas of the first hills present in the area. The Uccellina Mountains are nearby and offer magnificent excursions in nature.

Formiche di Grosseto

The city of Grosseto also includes the Formiche di Grosseto, a group of islets in the Tuscan Archipelago, a protected area where you can immerse yourself in a world waiting to be discovered.

Protected Marine Area

The entire grossetana coastal region is protected by the marine area of the Sanctuary for Marine Mammals. In this crystal clear and transparent sea, you can see dolphins, whales, and other marine animals.

The City Center

The city center is surrounded by the Grosseto Walls, keeping its original appearance intact. Grosseto's historical center is, therefore, a true treasure for enthusiasts of history and urban planning.

Thank you for reading this brief summary. I hope I have provided you with a comprehensive overview of Grosseto, the largest city in Tuscany, that offers many opportunities for discovery and adventure.
