Discover Grosotto, the quiet village in the Alps
Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about Grosotto, a small municipality located in the province of Sondrio in Lombardy, at an altitude of 743 meters above sea level. This charming village is located just a few kilometers away from Tirano towards Bormio.
If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing place, Grosotto is the perfect spot. Here you can immerse yourself in nature and explore the numerous trails that lead to the magnificent pastures of Valgrosina. However, the municipality of Grosotto offers a wide range of sports and cultural activities, organized by Pro Loco, both in summer and winter.
Monuments and places of interest
Grosotto is a village rich in history and culture. Although the ancient medieval village was partially destroyed by numerous raids and fires, it still retains some artistic and historical treasures.
Religious architecture
Among Grosotto's religious architectures stands out the Church of Sant'Eusebio, located in Patrioti Street. This church, equipped with a bell tower terminating in an octagonal dome, is a true masterpiece of religious architecture.
The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Grace, on the other hand, was built between 1487 and 1490 as a sign of thanks for the saved danger of destruction of the village by the Grisons. Consecrated in 1490, it was completely renovated between 1609 and 1623. The interior of the sanctuary, with a single nave, is frescoed by the Valtellinese painter Eliseo Fumagalli and it preserves an eighteenth-century organ.
Finally, the chapel of San Rocco and the oratory of SS. Crocefisso are two splendid religious buildings that represent an important testimony of the culture and faith of this community.
Military architecture
During the First World War, numerous defense positions were built in Grosotto as a second front line. Today, some of these structures are visitable and represent a historical testimony of great interest.
Among the most important, I remember the defensive position in loc. Castelin and the cannon in loc. Pugien. The former has an anti-aircraft position in reinforced concrete and a cave equipped with a cannon position; the latter, instead, shows a multiple position for cannons, as well as two well-preserved anti-aircraft positions.
Civil architecture
In addition to religious and military architecture, Grosotto preserves numerous civil architectures of great historical and artistic interest. Palazzo Omodei, the house of Captain Giacomo Robustelli, and Casa Stoppani are just a few examples.
Particularly suggestive, then, is the fountain-laundry ''dei quattro cannoni'', dating back to 1695 and located in front of the Stoppani house. The wine press, visitable by appointment, and the Osmetti mill represent important testimonies of the farming tradition of this community.
Conclusions
Grosotto is a village in Lombardy that will not disappoint you. Here, you can enjoy moments of peace and relaxation immersed in nature or discover the artistic and historical testimonies of this community. I advise you to take your time to visit all the activities and places of interest, enjoying every corner of this splendid alpine village.
