The city of Turin was founded around the third century BC by the Taurini, and later became a Roman colony when Augustus transformed it into "Julia Augusta Taurinorum" in the first century BC. After the Ostrogoth domain, the city became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin and later passed into the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy. In 1563, Turin became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. In 1861 it became the first capital (city) of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) after being the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
