Welcome to Grondona, a small historic town

Welcome to Grondona, a small town in the province of Alessandria, located in the beautiful Spinti Valley. With its 484 inhabitants, it is a peaceful and welcoming place, immersed in nature and rich in history.

The history of Grondona

Grondona has a long history dating back to the Carolingian era, when the area was feudalized to the Marquises of Gavi under Pavia. The town is first mentioned in an imperial document in 1164, when Frederick Barbarossa confirmed the privileges of the municipality of Pavia and subjected Grondona to it. Over the centuries, the town has undergone various influences, passing under the rule of the municipality of Tortona and the lords of Grondona, who pledged loyalty to Tortona in exchange for the protection of the municipality.

In 1259, Grondona became an autonomous municipality, governed by a podestà. Over time, the fiefdom of Grondona was the subject of various controversies and boundary delimitations with neighboring communities. In 1547, the municipality passed into the hands of Andrea Doria, who made it Imperial Fiefs. However, in 1560, it returned to the Malaspina family, who held it until 1797.
