The history of Grognardo

During World War II, Grognardo was a refuge for the Jewish family of the Urman, who had managed to escape deportation thanks to the help of Gabriele Garofalo, a young man of only 17. The Urman family was hosted by the Garofalo family until the end of the war. In 1979, Francesco and Elsa Garofalo received the high honor of Righteous Among the Nations for helping the Urman family survive during the war.

The coat of arms and the banner of Grognardo were granted by a decree of the President of the Republic in 1999. The coat of arms is divided, with part representing the Piedmontese family of the Beccaria. The banner, instead, is a split red and blue flag.
