Gremiasco

Introduction to Gremiasco

Hi friends, today I want to talk to you about Gremiasco, a town in the province of Alessandria, in Piedmont, also known as 'Gremiasch' in the Tortona dialect and 'Gremiasco' in the Ligurian language. It is a small town located on the right bank of the Curone stream, surrounded by nature and the greenery that characterizes it.

History and symbols of the town

Gremiasco has an ancient history, as far back as the Lombard period, the territory was part of the possessions of the Abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio, inserted in the territory of the monastic court of Casasco. Later, it became a fiefdom of the Malaspina, Fieschi, and Doria families, and only in 1818 did it become a municipality in its own right. During the fascist period, it was incorporated into the municipality of San Sebastiano Curone. The town crest reproduces the coat of arms of the Colombassi family and also features a tree and ears of wheat, which symbolize the activities of the valley, the medieval tower, and a star that represents religious faith.

Administration and society

The town of Gremiasco has been governed by many administrations over the years and was part of the Curone Grue and Ossona Mountain Community. In the last hundred years, starting from 1921, the resident population has decreased by 67%.

Monuments and places of interest

One of the most important monuments in the town is the parish church, which was rebuilt in 1697 on top of an existing Romanesque church. The interior is a single nave with side chapels, in Baroque style. On one side of the current apse, the Romanesque apse is still preserved, made of worked stone, once used as a storeroom and now used to store the Blessed Sacrament.
