Grazzano Badoglio
Grazzano Badoglio: a Piemontese town with a millenary history
Grazzano Badoglio, locally known as "Grassan", is a municipality in the province of Asti, Piedmont, with a population of 608 inhabitants. The place derives its name from "Gratis" or "Gratianus" and was formerly a settlement of the Roman civilization. Later, the ancient abbey founded by Aleramo del Monferrato in 961, dedicated to the Saviour, Mary, and the Saints Peter and Paul, made Grazzano Badoglio a place of great historical importance. Over the centuries, the donation of goods and rights led to the expansion of the monastery's prosperity, so much so that in 1408, it was decided to adopt the Benedictine reform that led to a grant of income to the Papal Curia of Rome.
With the annexation of Monferrato to the Savoy in 1708, the abbey came under the patronage of the Savoy, leading to disputes with the Benedictine abbots. In 1938, the name "Monferrato" was replaced with "Badoglio," in honor of Marshal of Italy Pietro Badoglio, who was born in the region in 1871 and died there in 1956.
