Grandola and Uniti: Let's discover a municipality rich in history in Lombardy.

Origin of the name

The municipality takes its name from the Lombard word "ganda" which means united villages. In fact, the specification "uniti" refers to the different hamlets and villages that over time have joined together to become what is now Grandola ed Uniti.

History

Grandola ed Uniti is located in a strategic area, which in the past was very important for the control of transit between Lake Como and Lake Lugano. In this territory, there are the ruins of a Semaforic Tower, which testifies to the strategic role of the area.

The Como Statutes of 1335 mention "Grandolla" as the municipality that, within the parish of Menaggio, was in charge of maintaining the stretch of Via Regina between the field of "Pozollo" and the "de Chollio" bridge. Over time, the municipality has evolved and is composed of the hamlets of Naggio, Velzo, Codogna, Cardano, and Gonte.

Under Napoleon Bonaparte, a law in 1798 decreed the separation of the territory of Naggio, which formed a separate municipality, although in 1805 it was reunited with Grandola.

In 1927, the territories of Bene Lario and Grona were united with Grandola ed Uniti, but in 1950 formed a separate municipality.

Symbols

The coat of arms of Grandola ed Uniti was granted by a Royal Decree in 1929. The tower topped by a flame is the symbol of the ancient fortress located in the hamlet of Codogna and was used to communicate messages to Como.

Ultimately, Grandola ed Uniti is a municipality rich in history and culture, an ideal place for a comprehensive visit. If you're lucky, you can visit this spectacular area during its famous summer festivals, where you can experience the unique atmosphere of this beautiful town.
