From Origins to the 18th Century

The first written document that talks about the settlement dates back to 1176, where the city is described as a seven-family agricultural village, some of Slavic origin, others Latin, subjected to the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Aquileia. In the following years, Gradisca d'Isonzo becomes an agricultural center devoid of political importance.
The situation changes in 1420, when the city falls into the hands of the Republic of Venice and assumes greater strategic importance thanks to its border position. Between 1473 and 1498, a defensive fortress is built on the right bank of the Isonzo, which also includes the walled city.
