Fontanarossa is a small hamlet in the municipality of Gorreto, located in the Trebbia Valley at an altitude of 938 meters above sea level. The village has only 54 inhabitants, but it is important for its history and the beauty of the surrounding territory.

History

Fontanarossa was a fiefdom of the Ghibelline family of Malaspina from 1197 until it passed to the Visconti of Milan in 1361. Later, the hamlet was owned by the Genoese families Pallavicini and Doria. During the French domination of Napoleon Bonaparte, Fontanarossa became a territorial and civil borderland with the villages of Orezzoli and Pregola.

After various changes of ownership, in 1815 Fontanarossa became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia and subsequently in 1923 it definitively passed to the province of Genoa.

During World War II, Fontanarossa suffered from ferocious round-ups by German soldiers to capture Jewish refugees and Allied soldiers.

The symbol of the village is the white Narcissus flower, very common in the meadows of Mount Cavalla, on which Fontanarossa is also located.
