Gorreto

Discovering Gorreto: a small municipality immersed in nature

Welcome to Gorreto, a small municipality with only 93 inhabitants located on the border between the metropolitan city of Genoa, the province of Alessandria, and Emilia-Romagna with the province of Piacenza. Gorreto is immersed in nature, in a strategic location at the confluence of the Dorbera torrent and the Trebbia river. The landscape is characterized by a dense vegetation of willows that inspired the name of the municipality. The territory is cultivated up to the altitudes where the forests cover the slopes of the mountains. In the Trebbia River, in addition to the Aveto tributary, it is possible to practice numerous activities such as canoeing, swimming, and fishing. Gorreto is part of the Antola Regional Natural Park.

The history of Gorreto: from the Abbey of San Colombano to the Centurione family

The origins of Gorreto date back to the 13th century, when the municipality was placed under the control of the Abbey of San Colombano. Later on, it became the domain of the Malaspina family, who built a castle and its related fortifications there. In 1640, Gorreto was ceded to the Genoese Centurione family, who built the Centurione-Tornelli palace in the main square of the municipality. Like other great Genoese families, the Centurione Scotto invested part of their fortunes in the purchase of some Malaspina fiefs in the Trebbia valley, becoming feudal lords of the Holy Roman Empire. Gorreto was part of their possessions until the 17th century.
